• Volkswagon Returns to the Star Wars Cantina

In Volkswagen's new Super Bowl ad (below), a dog works to get himself slim and fit enough to squeeze through a doggie door and chase the new Volkswagen Beetle down the street, a narrative one Star Wars Cantina denizen (Dr. Evazan to those in-the-know) finds more compelling than last year's famous "The Force" ad (an opinion Darth Vader takes some issue with, apparently).

Check out the ad above, and click here for information on Volkswagen's "Intergalactic Invite" promotion, which allows fans to send out their Big Game party invites in the form of a Star Wars space crawl...

What an odd bookend for the pair of VW ads, this has nothing at all to do with the car even less so than last year's ad. Ponda is missing his arm, that's a good choice, also puts it post-ANH. I wonder how much VW paid Lucasfilm to do these.

I didn't notice Ponda's missing arm the first time, but I did see that he has the flipper instead of the furry hand, which is a cool choice. Oddly, there's a PT-style Aqualish walking by the camera at the beginning, with the two-fingered hand, so I guess they can coexist after all.

It strikes me as odd yet cool to see characters from different iterations of the cantina - the England set, the California set, and the Special Edition - all in one place, along with non-ANH species like Mon Calamari and Ishi Tib.

It's a cool reconstruction of the set, and I appreciate the level of detail, but yeah, it's an incredibly bizarre scene to put in the ad - I get that they're watching the Super Bowl like the cantina is a sports bar, but the car connection is completely gone by that point.
