• Solid Gold C-3PO and Solid Silver R2-D2 Celebrate Star Wars' 35th Anniversary

Bite my shiny metal... actually you don't have to bite these officially licensed, limited edition Solid Gold C-3PO and Solid Silver R2-D2 figurines to know they're real: they are, and they're spectacular!

Only a limited number of deep-pocketed Star Wars fans will get a crack at the precious metal pair, however. Just 35 of the statues are available for sale and when they're gone, they're gone like Alderan. The figures come from I.E.I. Original Shop and are officially licensed by Lucasfilm Ltd.

The 35 theme crops up often in this heavy metal promotion due to 2012 being the 35th anniversary of the release of the very first Star Wars film back in 1977. Both the gold C-3PO and the silver R2-D2 weigh 35 grams each R2 looks chunkier but gold weighs more than silver.

Each figurine is mounted on a mirror-faced pedestal emblazoned with a gold plaque noting the figure's unique production number and carrying the well-known STAR WARS logo.

Glass bell jar style covers keep dust and fingerprints off the intricately detailed treasures with the C-3PO case being taller (125mm or 5) to accommodate the figurine's comparatively greater height. Speaking of measurements, Threepio's are 1004832mm (4 x 1.92 x 1.28) while Artoo's are 603936mm (2.4 x 1.56 x 1.44).

Last and definitely not least, the pricing. You'll need to fork over a cool 500,000 yen (about $6,000) for the Solid Gold C-3PO and a slightly less princely 150,000 yen (about $1,800) for the Solid Silver R2-D2... and if you're a serious Star Wars collector, you'll be wanting both of them.

Those have always been overpriced, IMHO. Sad, really. But they are quality cards, so I guess you pay what you get for.
