You could print the stars and paste them on instead of painting them. Another alternative is to digitally create the background and then have it printed at Kinko's or any other store that have the capability to print it (expensive though). Or go to a fabric store and check out their selection of night sky prints. I've seen some that would be good enough to use as backgrounds. Some hobby shops for model trains also have similar backgrounds (they use the term backdrops more so than backgrounds).
