Attack of the Clones 3D may be postponed, but the Chosen One is still here in The Black Series anyway! Anakin Skywalker builds on the 2005 Evolutions and 2010 Target exclusive Geonosis Arena Showdown versions by finally getting rid of the soft goods tabards, resulting in a much cleaner look. Anakin can also now do the splits thanks to borrowed hips from the 2010 Vintage Collection Darth Vader, and newly tooled rocker ankles (as seen on some figures from The Clone Wars and the 6” Black Series) allow him to stand in even more realistic poses. There are three distinct paint variations of this figure – the first, shown in the photos, features dark brown hair; the second features much lighter brown hair, making him look appropriately younger; the third and most realistic version features light brown hair with an added dark paint wash. Ten years ago, the Secret Ceremony figure proudly touted its nine points of articulation and then-novel ankle articulation – this figure is a nice reminder what a long way action figures have come.
While this figure does include some much-needed upgrades, it also makes some mistakes that hold it back from reaching its full potential (hey, just like Obi-Wan did to Anakin!). The head is recycled from the 2010 figure, so the overly thick jaw still makes it look like Anakin just had his wisdom teeth removed. The accessories include an incorrect Revenge of the Sith lightsaber without any black highlights and a flimsy cybernetic hand that now has an even wider hole in the wrist for no apparent reason. This figure would have been immensely more interesting with his unique sleeveless robe, or an added green lightsaber, or at least a hilt that can plug into his belt.
Anakin Skywalker could have been a more unique figure, but it’s still definitely the best Episode II version Hasbro has ever produced. They certainly didn’t need to pack him two to a case or carry him forward beyond the first wave, but he’s at least worth checking out if you’re not already tired of Anakin figures. I hope Hasbro will re-release this figure with a better likeness sometime down the road – as long as the impending sequel trilogy madness doesn’t deter them.
