Favorite DVD commentary tracks and why

I listen to commentary tracks. I tend to like those that are anecdotal in nature- casting decisions, funny stories, etc. My favorites are:
Chasing Amy- too funny (the fan boy cut scene was great, too.)
Ghostbusters- more funny stuff- the MST3K motiff was neat also.
Star Trek TMP- it was interesting to hear about the Blaster Beam (the instrument used during the V-ger sequences) and all of the updates for the director's edition.

Yeah, I love commentary tracks. They add so much to the movie. My favorites:
1) Mallrats- Funnier than the actual movie. The core group of the Smith cast hang out and just make fun of everything and everyone... couldn't have been scripted any funnier.
2) Return to Me- Again, too funny.
3) City of Lost Children- makes you realize that just because you don't understand a part, dosn't mean your stupid. The writer didn't even know what he was getting at.

I prefer the more technical commentarys, like how the movies are made, interesting details and stuff like that so that means that my fave commentary track is...

MIB - the other disk that has the "MST3k"-style commentary track, it was fun watching Tommy Lee Jones and director Barry Sonnenfeld talk and talk and talk, they were interesting people to watch a movie with.

UHF - Weird Al has a ton of great stuff to say about this film! Michael Richads' and Emo Phillips' cameo appearances on the track are also great stuff.

Tron - These guys are clearly passionate about their film and a lot of interesting philosophy comes out during the commentary.


I actually own Ghostbusters, but haven't had a chance to play the commentary yet.

Chasing Amy and Clerks both had hilarious commentaries.

I love audio commentaries, one of my features since the days of Laserdisc. Here's a few of my favorites, I know I'm forgetting some great ones.

American Werewolf in London - David Naughton and Griffin Dunne sit together and talk about making the film. Lotsa laughs and intresting stories from these two.

Clerks, Clerks: TAS, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - Pretty much any commentary that Kevin Smith and gang is involved in is great. Can't wait for the upcoming 2-disc Anniversary set of Clerks. They are going to record a new audio commentary with Cast and Crew.

Evil Dead/Evil Dead II/Army of Darkness - Great audio commentaries, love to hear Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi discuss making the movie. AOD has some hilarious comments.

Re-Animator/Bride of Re-Animator - Great commentaries from the film makers and the stars of both of these films. Re-Animator is great when Barbara Crampton is talking about Dr. Hill.

The Goonies - Richard Donner and most of the kids come together to discuss the making of Goonies. Sean Astin leaves halfway thru though and they mention he's going to do some filming for LOTR's.

Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace - Don't have much to say that hasn't been said before. Great audio commentary. The only thing that would have made it better was if they would have recorded them all in the same room. A cast commentary would have been nice also, maybe for the Archival Editions?

The Thing - Great audio commentary from John Carpenter and Kurt Russel. Not only is the movie excellent, but stick J.C. and K.R. is a room together and they really have alot of fun. Their audio commentary on Big Trouble in Little China is great also.

Willow - Warwick Davies gets a Audio Commentary all to himself where he gets to talk about the making of Willow. It's amazing that he can carry the whole Audo Commentary himself.

I loved the commentary track from the deleted scenes of Blade 2. Del Toro was a hit, even though it is not a true commentary to the movie. The only other commentary I have actually listened to completely and thoroughly enjoyed was that of Tom Savini on his version of Night of the Living Dead. Most of the time I do not bother listening to the commentaries.

Roger Ebert on Dark City is my all time favorite. Spinal Tap is a close second. Having the 3 "characters" return to comment on their documentary is absolutely hysterical. "Remember him?" "Oh yeah, isn't he dead now?" Also Mel Gibson is pretty entertaining on Braveheart.

I have that DVD but never watched the commentary, so on your advice I watched the first several minutes because it was late. It was cool to see everyone after so many years. For the most part everyone looks the same- Except Chunk, he got skinny- I love how he won the Presidency at Berkley running as Chunk.

And how about Kerri Green? She is now in her mid thirties, and looking very good. The drug abuse jokes with Feldman were a little sad- I can't wait to watch the rest.

Any Kevin Smith DVD has awesome commentary. My personal favorite is Chasing Amy.
