I just listened to the Nina Gordon version on Youtube. It's not the whole song, but it is kind of funny to hear her sing it in a style that is completely opposite from the original.

During the downpour here in SoCal, as I tuned my car radio to the first preset: "No Rain" by Blind Melon. If only "Ironic" would've followed it... :don'tyouthink:

A professor once said there isn't anything ironic in that song, it should be called "_hit happens."

As for myself. Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet ~ Having An Average Weekend (The Kids In The Hall Theme).

The professor was probably right. Well, here's my take on it:

    An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day NOT IRONIC
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay NOT IRONIC
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late NOT IRONIC
    Isn't it ironic
    Don't you think?

It's like rain on your weddin' day NOT IRONIC
It's a free ride when you've already paid COULD BE SOMEWHAT IRONIC
It's the good advice that you just didn't take NOT IRONIC
And who would've thought, it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
Well, isn't this nice NOT IRONIC; IN FACT, IT'S EXPECTED
    And isn't it ironic
    Don't you think?

Well life has a funny way of sneakin' up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's goin' right, right
And life has a funny way nobody helpin' you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face NOT IRONIC AT ALL

A traffic jam when you're already late NOT IRONIC
A no smoking sign on your cigarette break COULD BE SOMEWHAT IRONIC
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife COULD BE SOMEWHAT IRONIC
It's meetin' the man of my dreams
And then meetin' his beautiful wife, umm NOT IRONIC
    And isn't it ironic
    Don't you think?
    A little too ironic
And yeah, I really do think

And well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
And life has a funny, funny way of helpin' you out
Helpin' you out NOT IRONIC AT ALL

But if I were the songwriter:

    An old man turned ninety-eight
He played and won the lottery for his first time ever, after complaining nobody ever wins it, and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Flypaper Brand Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late, for criminal named On-Time

It's like rain on your weddin' day, when you held it in the Sahara in the dry season, in order to avoid all rainout possibilities
It's a free ride when you've already paid in the toll lane, being a notorious cheapskate
It's the good advice that you just didn't take about attending a free Advice Taking conference

    etc. etc.

I have their album with that song. Another song on there, "Zombie Compromise", was used in a Taco Bell commercial several years ago.

Since the academy awards are on here is the performance that should've won for best song back in 2006... Mitch and Mickey for A Kiss At The End Of The Rainbow.

BCJ, that prof was my favorite I had in college, tough but fun and fair I might add. While I'm not in the history field I do think I'm better for having taken courses that he taught.
