this thred's in case anyone else here keeps up w/conan, kimmel, kilby, letterson (thanx marge) et al
i'll start off by reporting carrie fisher's kilby appearance a coupla weeks ago, in which he sed to her "tell the audience who your parents are: debbie reynolds and eddie fisher, right?" to which she replied, with a deadpan, Daria-esque lack of melodramatic inflection (so i bet more than one fan missed the allusion), "that's not true, that's impossible"
later he pit her against that ep's other guest, david allan grier, in the show's "yambo" game in which they each have 3 seconds to answer quextions put to them. one quextion for grier: "name the most annoying charcter in star wars" (correct answer jarjar), to which he incorrectly replied "jabba the hut" and subsequently lost to leia
overall tho, ever since kimmel came on a year ago i think kilby's persona-schtick looks kinda phony and stiff in comparison; the throwaway barb on snl comes to mind: "he seems cool at first but soon the soulless emptiness inside is revealed" "oh, kinda like craig kilborn" while jimmy's got uncle frank, cousin sal and andy milonakis and more fearless daring, kilby keeps kissin up to too many Maxim covergirls and basketball bores

Carrie was over here on Monday night at the (I believe) National Theatre but I was not particularly interested so I did not go. Her PA was probably to plug her latest book but who knows what may've transpired. Perhaps I could've asked a question such as "Do you think you'd have gotten on with your Father if he'd not been killed at Endor?" and then been curtly seen off the premises. (These PA's normally come with a disclaimer than no SW questions are to asked - it happened with Alec Guinness but that didn't stop the anoraks trying - and he was quite amenable actually, contrary to popular lore). Anyway, my bro was mad we didn't go as he's read some of her books and quite likes the old duchess. I saw Stephen King there when he was promoting Bag of Bones and that was a really good night, so who knows, perhaps she went down well. The event was not, however, written up in the press so it may have been as unremarkable as Conan's elusive talent (that hateful and desperately unfunny ,IMO, man).

These days the only late night watching I do is ER in the hope that Julianna Margulies makes a return one day (Sorry, thatw as my attempt at crowbarring some on-topic reference to the thread title )

-so you've been able to view him? how bout dave or the others? i also watch weehour gabbers leno and charlie rose but Only if i have a particular interest in their guests that nite.
for his first few years my opinion of conan took the opposite trajectory of the prevailing wisdom; when he premiered in '93 and everyone piled on i thought he was great, and when everyone started coming around i thought he was in a slump. but imo he's been steadily entertaining for years now with his omnivorous, wide-ranging enthusiasm for pop culture, bits like preparation h raymond and vicious digs at ah-nuld (whom he seems to instinctively despise as a school bully, even tho most of the world doesn't see it; may also explain his insistince on portraying all german speech as hitler-strident? ). and his limitations re personal biases (rockabilly) and persona (kinduva less hip, dorkier version of tarantino) are much less annoying than say, letterman's (nascar/baseball and misanthropic-insular embodiment of midwest, college-educated white america- paglia's right to ask "does he have Any black fans?"- a deficit conan clearly does not share, black america Loves him), leno's (overly assuring, unchallenging kissup to the working class, as tho he views his gig as a sacred cribwatching duty), charlie rose (showin off his eclectic interests to impress the nyc yuppie-lectual crowds in which he circulates, kinduv intellegensia's answer to diane sawyer or babs walters ) or kilborn, who wants us to think that mixing his personal indugences (winning hunkiness plus the prev-mentioned basketball and Maxim coverskanks) with tastes he's glommed from others (bossanova, martinis, wallpaper magazine and LA/vegas nouveau chic in general) constitutes a sensibility worthy of applause for its originality. it does not (as still-missed latenite gabber bill maher quipped, "Maxim-type mags are for weenies who just don't want to dirty themselves with Real porn" ).
which touches on why i like kimmel as well; i'm often surprised at the intrepid irreverence coming from this doughy, mediocre-looking former morning dj; as oscar wilde said "one should always be a little improbable" (the fact that the heroic sarah silverman finds him date-worthy doesn't hurt either)

btw fisher seemed somehow addled on kilby's show; almost like she has ms or parkinson's and, rather than reveal it, prefers people to suspect she's fallen off the wagon

Not sure where I have seen her before - here face is very very familiar in the kind of way that I think I see her regularly in something which I can't place. Reading the link I have not seen her in the films and not sure I recognise her because of my avid watching of the much-better-than-Seinfeld Larry Sanders show. She has an look of ER or Deep Space Nineabout her though. More Maura Tierney than Nana Visitor - oh well.

I had no idea there were so many other chatshowhosts. I only know the main ones and have no opinion on them either way. Just Conan. When I watch him (which I don't anymore as I don't have access to that channel since I left Notting Hill) I sit incredulous at the man's apparent humour. kind of reminds me of first year Uni students - oh just everything I loathe about 'funnymen'...
