The first episode was great. This could be another Band of Brothers in the making.
2 female troopers are caught with a group when they're caught out in the open under fire, having been the convoy truck drivers.
One, in trying to find privacy to "squat" while they're close to pinned down and dug in, inadvertently discovers the Iraqi flanking manuever being made by insurgents in a Mosque.
Washington doesn't want the troops firing on a Mosque because it looks like we don't like Muslems this way. The troops are under fire and have to return fire to survive. They're fresh out of boot camp out there, but they don't care if they follow orders or not if someone's shooting at them. The bullets start to fly. One Iraqi gets blown apart from the waist up and they show what's left of his intestines sticking out of his pants. Pretty graphic.
Anyway, the cast includes:
"Mrs. B" - Age 19 or 20. Timid chick that won't go to the bathroom in front of the guys and who can't dig a foxhole, but who screams and gives off their position when she gets mad because the guys try to help. I don't think she's married. I think the B's for *****
"Double-Wide" - a black or mixed-race mother of a small infant. She is the other driver the braver of the two women. She made her first kills last night.
"Bo" - the 19 year old football quarterback without quite a complete scholarship. Before leaving for deployment, he and his young wife "did it" in every room of their house. He's getting the rest of his GI Bill to finish funding college, except that a land mine under their truck caravan just blew the bones out of his leg (great special effect if you're not eating while watching this - lot of meat and blood shown). He was evacuated at the end of the episode and will be the "rehab veteran" in the show.
"Angel" - black dude from Arkansas who wanted to be a Broadway singer after being a great gospel choir member in his church. He doesn't like the other black dude, but he's a great shot.
The other black dude - he's from the streets and handy with his rifle. He thinks Iraq reminds him of home and calls the Sunni Insurgents Crips or Bloods or something I can't post here. If he could kill some of them at a McDonald's, it would all be the same as Los Angeles or somewhere to him. He's proud of his kills and thinks black men have to look out for themselves in a white man's world.
The black lieutenient - an idiot, he's needlessly agressive with his men. The white sergeant already got him in trouble with the white captain. Angel thinks he deserved it for a bad deployment call, but the other black guy thinks it's a racist thing.
The white guy with glasses - he screams ugly things at his wife when he's home. He leaves for Iraq, decides he appreciates her and is sorry now, but she's "doing" another guy no sooner than he'd left. I think she's pregnant with his child by next week's previews, but maybe it's the new guy she's boning. However, they have a kid (probably hers but not the soldier's) who's going to be kidnapped or something next week according to previews. This takes place back in the USA - so no one's confused.
The white sergeant - he thinks all the new kids are morons and are going to get killed. He wanted to go home but got stuck with another month or more of duty. He also thinks the black lietenient is an idiot. He's the tough guy or "Tom Berenger" if you're comparing this to Platoon.
The white captain - he's a nice guy. He's smart. Not much else is know about him yet except that he cares about the men under his command.
The Iraqi insurgent leader - he's a prick that wants a lawyer now that he's been captured. He wants to know when they are going to make him take his clothes off and do "gay stuff" or pose with their female soldiers. It looks like he'll aggravate the men into an unlawful killing next week. While the other Iraqi dudes look like "towel heads" (sorry PC people - term from the show just like "Seppies" is from SW), this guy looks like a night club player or something. He's too slick and western to belong with the other ones. If he's not murdered next week, he'll be an interesting diversion.
Anyway, who else caught this? Re-runs might be on Monday or Tuesday next week.
New shows are Wednesday nights at 10pm, and re-run immediately afterwards (11pm) on FX (Pacific time).
