There’s a new lawman in Town and he’s riding tall in the saddle. No, I’m not talking about a new Western set, but the 7235 Police Motorcycle that debuted with the LEGO City Police line-up this year. Sets with three-wheelers, or ‘trikes,’ have been the norm for a long time, but this year marks the return of the traditional two-wheel motorcycle, with some major changes.
The motorcycle is made up of two major elements: a black undercarriage and a white engine cowling that snaps on top of it. Both parts are basically single-use pieces. The undercarriage looks like a scooter and has the motor, shock absorbers, wheel housings, and handlebars. The cowling fits down over the top of the undercarriage and has a spot for a standing mini-fig, plus a decorative dual exhaust molded into the rear. The wheels are two pieces (rubber tire over plastic spoke-rim) and snap into the wheel housings on the undercarriage. Two ‘kick-stand’ pieces pop into holes on each side of the undercarriage. The kick-stand really acts to keep the cycle from falling over on it’s side. You can position the kick-stand pieces to make the bike angle downward as it takes a curve. The rest of the pieces are merely decorative or help flesh out the cycle, such as the rear end that is made out of 1x2 plates and 1x2 tiles. The interesting thing is the new 1x1 translucent plate-slopes used as ‘lights.’ In the past, a vehicle would just have 1x1 translucent square plates. But these new slopes add a sporty look to the vehicles that use them. The mini-fig is your basic black leather-clad biker with white helmet and smoked-glass visor. His head has sunglasses, sideburns, and a goatee under a determined mouth. A classic mini-fig radio snaps onto the back of the cycle and is the officer’s only gear.
Action Features: Low. Wheels spin, antenna moves, and kick-stands are adjustable.
Decals and Other Dreaded Building Steps: Low. There are three decals (all the same) to be applied to the cycle. The interesting thing is you get two sets of decals: one set says "POLICE" and the other says "POLIZEI". So depending on which side of the Atlantic you’re on, you can choose what type of decals you’d like. Of course, the set of decals you use also determines the type of siren (US or European) you gotta make when you’re pushing the bike down your LEGO highway
Structural Integrity: High. This bike holds together extremely well, but with only 28 small pieces, it should.
"Zoom" Factor: High. It’s hard to resist pushing this cycle across the table top making siren sounds as you go.
Cool Building Surprise: 1x1 translucent plate/slopes.
Leftover Pieces: Low. Three spare parts: T-shaped tubing connector (kick-stand), white gear shift/antenna, smoked visor.
Frustration Level of Hunting for that One Piece that Surely Must Be Missing and I Bought an Incomplete Set and Will have to Call LEGO Customer Service for a Replacement Part: Low. This set only has 28 pieces and one double-sided instruction sheet, but I still missed a step and ended up with two 2x2 white plates leftover! I may have go back to building with Duplo.
Completist Temptation: Medium. There are three other companion sets to the 7235 -
7236 Police Car = $5
7237 Police Headquarters = $50 (down from $70)
7245 Prisoner Transport = $10
Of the three, I like the Police Car and Prisoner Transport best. There aren’t any doors or hinged roofs on the vehicles, but I like the ‘sporty’ aerodynamic look that LEGO is attempting with new cars and trucks. It’s a departure from the old square ‘boxy’ vehicles, plus there’s some interesting details like the wheel hub-mud guards. I don’t care for the Police HQ since it looks like a maximum security installation you’d see in a futuristic police state. I’m not really into Police sets though, since I kinda like the idea that there isn’t any real crime in my Town anyway.
Braggart List: Low. I’m not a big Police collector but my Town has a few peace keepers to keep those rowdy tourists in line. Here are the other sets in my Town Police collection -
4012 Wave Cops
6384 Police Station
6533 Police 4x4
6625 Speed Trackers
