    Brian Setzer Orchestra

Although I'm nearly a week late in making this thread I just wanted to say that I saw Brian Setzer Orchestra Christmas Extravaganza and it was an awesome show. I'm not the biggest fan of Christmas music but it was a fun time and was only 25 bucks. They played about 25 songs with 18 or so being Christmas songs, another 4-5 were 'Setzer Classics' and there were a couple of 'classic big band' songs. My one complaint is that when they played "Rock This Town" it started out as a three piece (Setzer, drummer and slap bass player) and about 2/3rd's into the song the rest of the orchestra came out and they all finished the song.

I'm not sure how many people here like big band music (I'm going to guess not many) but if you do or would like a different twist on Christmas songs go and see them it will be well worth your time. As a bonus the opening act The Slaptones is three sisters from Sweeden :lipsrseal and their father playing drums.

I don't know if I could sit through a Christmas program but I love Big Band music. I've been a fan of Brian Setzer since the neo-Big Band craze exploded in the late '90s when "Jump Jive An' Wail" was getting a lot of airplay on MTV2.

My favorite of the new big bands was Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, which had a major hit around the same time with "You & Me & the Bottle Makes 3 Tonight." Their animated video probably did a lot to boost it's appeal. Damn, that entire album was good.

Royal Crown Review also had a big hit with "Barflies at the Beach" and they appeared in The Mask as the band that backed Jim Carrey during the "Hey Pachuco" number. Good stuff.

I still dig Benny Goodman & Louis Prima's "Sing Sing Sing" which is probably the seminal big band anthem. Check it out if you haven't already. John Williams and the Boston Pops also covered it and their hi-fidelity recording will blow you away.

Did you know that there is a Star Wars big band album? It's called "Cocktails in the Cantina" and was sold through the fan club a few years back. The "Imperial March" big band style is freakin' awesome!

I've always thought that Brian Setzer & his orchestra rocked. I just picked up his newest/2nd Christmas album this past week, and am planning to listen to it today. He puts so much energy and effort into his music and I love his arrangements. Unless I'm mistaken, I have all his orchestra CDs and his recent (late 90's to present) solo efforts. I really like the Stray Cats back in the day.

I also listen to the BBVDaddies, and have all three of their albums. Great stuff and they're still in my listening rotation. Go Daddy-O!

Lately I've been playing a lot of Bond music (the quartet of young ladies that play 1st and second violin, cello and viola w/techno backup). If you saw either Johnny Enlish or XXX: State of the Union, they were in both movies during the party scenes. Really great stuff and they're very talented musicians. New spins on classic classical compositions.

I do listen to Big Band music, and I like it. My late father (6/17/05-Miss ya, Dad!) always listened to Benny Goodman and all the greats. Lately I've been listening to the 'Stage Door Canteens' type of compliations. I'm not heavily into Jazz, but I admire the talent and influence it has.

I'm not musically inclined (I only can play the first 12 notes of the Pink Panther theme with my right hand on the piano), but I've always been fascinated with the creative process of composition. I'm also a fan of taking classic compositions and tweaking them to refresh them for today's audiences. That's why I like Bond, and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. 'A Mad Russian's Christmas' is a favorite piece.

Just listened to a 'Surfin Christmas' CD at work last night as we were cleaning up. Good stuff.

Brian Setzer = the Shizzy McGrizzly.

The man kicks some serious butt, either doing the swing thang or the rockabilly thang. And he is a great axeman.

I actually enjoy some of Bond's earlier stuff, when they were more classical/techno fusion, but as time goes by and they become more poppy, I find I enjoy them less and less.

And Ji'dai, thanks for the recommendation. I've been debating picking up Cocktails in the Cantina for quite some time, and you're the first person I know of who owns it.
    Tommy, close your eyes.

I was a bit iffy about it myself, especially since it was before Thanksgiving (which Brian joked about) but it was great. One thing that suprised me was that he didn't take as many solo's as I thought he would, granted he to alot of solos but not on every song like I thought he would have.

Brian Setzer is great, I loved him with the Stray Cats and I think he is great now. I love listening to his Big Band music, and the Christmas music he does. They usually perform at the lighting of the treee in Rockefellar center in NYC, so thats when I catch him live. As far as Big Band music goes in general, it really kicks ***. There is nothing like it. My wife and I did a dance solo to the Andrew sisters "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" when we got married (9 years ago). Now I have my kids listen to Big Band/Swing music, and they love it. Hey JJ Bonds, where did you see him perform, and does anyone know if he is coming up in the Connecticut area to perform(Besides Rockafeller Center).
