Star Trek Beyond: the one where Kirk wears a leg holster and Star Lord's costume

I was already out, so unfortunately I can't slam the door on New Coke Trek anymore, but how can anybody be ok with this?

"Just keep making Star Trek into other franchises until it's unrecognizable, it'll sell like gangbusters and nobody will think about it 10 seconds after walking out of the theater."

Star Lord boots and short jacket? Check.

    Han Solo hip holster? Check.

Star Trek in any way? ... Star Trek? ... negatory.

"But he's got his rank and branch color as giant epaulets!" Yup, he sure does.

Good thing this movie is being made by committee led by a guy whose writing experience is 1 small movie and a handful of TV episodes over 12 years, and a guy who has written and starred in some comedies who is actively trying to write a movie that is less Star Trek and more of a western or heist for the lowest common denominator crowd; and directed by the guy who did a few Fast & Furious sequels. This movie reeks of "just get anybody, we have a release date to hit!" and is starting to shape up as an "anniversary" film the same way that Die Another Day was: a terrible dishonoring.
Darth Vader is becoming the Mickey Mouse of Star Wars.

Kylo Ren - came from Space Brooklyn, although he moved to Space Williamsburg before it was trendy.

The use of a lightsaber does not make one a Jedi, it is the ability to not use it.

The outfit sort of reminds me of Enterprise's at a quick glance.

Similar color, shoulder color, top zip, utilitarian trousers. Enterprise's outfits were so bleh though.

I like it. There's a gunslinger quality to it.

If that's not what Star Trek is about, please tell me how John Wayne or Clint Eastwood played less enlightened / less just characters?

They were not scientists. There's the difference.

Star Trek isn't about "law and order", or "frontier justice". Clint Eastwood is famous for his nearly amoral characters.

I am not debating per se JT, but take SFS, The Measure of a Man, and Chains of Command.

In the first, the Klingons are killing to get the secret of Genesis.

    Kirk fights them.

In the second, Riker tries to prove Data is property. It's a court case with a lynch mob against Data.

In CoC, the Cardassians (my phone tried to put Kardashians, LOL) torture Picard for the sake of forcing him to comply and he is resistant to almost his end, like a Native American tribe trying to force its captured into conversion, while the war hawkish replacement captain wants to start a genocidal war like the whites who wanted to wipe out the "savages." Both sides are not in any position of absolute right.

I think you can tell the same stories with horses and six-guns. Roddenberry originally pitched a wagon-train to the stars and TOS crew velcroed their phasers on. Archer does wear a holster on away missions, just not with a Han Solo tie down.

Parts of Tombstone and Young Guns II were set in court rooms like Measure of A Man (debating cattle property instead of android property).

I wonder if this just points to a gray area in comparing more apples with more oranges, or can you have apples and apples whether or not they dress like gunfighters for successful marketing?

Uhhh, what? Even at the end of ST3, Kirk tries to save Kruge. There's no lynch mob against Data, I just watched that episode Sunday. Chain of Command has essentially nothing to do with anything you just said about that 2-part episode, and Jellico wasn't trying to start a war, he was responding to the Cardassian threat. Archer is a doofus who has virtually nothing to do with Star Trek. That was an entirely nonsensical reply.

Star Trek Beyond Vomit has its trailer up:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRVD32rnzOw

It's a repulsive trailer that desperately hopes young audiences won't know that Star Trek doesn't spell "Guardians of the Galaxy". I think the motocross bit may be the worst part. Director Justin "The Fast and Furious 3: Tokyo Drift" Lin admits he is destroying the Enterprise fairly early in this one. But Lin actually returned the dignity sleeves to the female uniforms so their rank is back, which is better than Abrams.

You know JT, this is one of those times where you and I may agree. Except I liked Carol Marcus in her underwear in Darkness (and in the shuttle pod's light). But our overall comparatively similar opinion doesn't bode too well for Star Trek.
