Has anybody downloaded books/'Net flicked' them?

I (literally) drive around all day for my job and I get bored with what's on the radio. I had a satellite radio but that got old to, so what I often do is get an audio book from my local library and listen to it when driving from store to store. The library is great and all but I've listened to most of what they have to offer that interests me so I'm looking at getting more. I've started looking into downloading them off the interweb but they seem pretty pricey, $15 for one book a month isn't anywhere near enough "book for the buck." So I did some searching and came across a company that mails you the books and you return them ala Net Flicks. This seems like a better deal but I wonder what the turn around rate on that is???

Does anybody have any experience doing this with books??? Or perhaps can recommend a service that I should use?

I had an audible account for a while, downloaded several audio books, but it got to be a bit too expensive. The nice thing about audible was the free and/or cheap downloads.

Also, I like the fact that audible allows you to download and re-download your purchases at any time, so if you lose them you can download them again any time you want. It also has seemless integration with iTunes, and as a certified iTunes junkie, this is a good thing. I have a couple hundred gigs of data in my iTune library, movies, music, audio books, music videos, television shows, and movie trailers. In fact I am getting ready to upgrade my laptop hard drives to twin 500GB drives to hold my library without using an external drive like my western digital passport.

I have an audible.com account. I have since canceled my "subscription", but the account is still good and I can re-download even though I do not have a paid subscription any more. I have been very pleased with the service considering it still allows me to download books I have already purchased regardless of my continued paid subscription.

I will likely start back with a paid subscription again once I need more books and/or have more time.

I listen to these ones every week:

-For Star Wars, check out the aforementioned forcecast. Besides their weekly episode, they also feature Clone Wars discussion episodes, and numerous "micro-casts."

-For movies in general, I like the slashfilmcast, which has 2 podcasts a week (the "afterdark" show is more of a bonus episode). Also under the same banner is The Tobolowsky Files, a slashfilmcast related podcast featuring character actor Stephen "Ned Ryerson" Tobolowsky and his great stories.

-Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier's SMODcast is always great (and vulgar).

-Comic News Insider is a great comic book related podcast.

-NPR also has a lot of downloadable shows.

The Maryland State Library system allows you to download audiobooks to an MP3 player or Ipod via your computer for free. You get them for 14 days or until you update the playlist on your media player. You might check to see if something similar is available near you.
