Someone Should Make A "cardback" Of All The Modern Figures Replacing The 102 Original

I have a Photoshop project for only the best, most enterprising person (with time on their hands) to tackle.

I designed the look for a "Kenner-style" cardback showing all the modern figures arranged like an '80's cardback (see picture of one below - but I'd recommend blue for the new cardback, similar to the way ESB cardbacks were done). Someone could edit the pictures of the modern figures in and make a great poster!

I changed the order of the figures via a new strategy for displaying them.

Left-to-right in rows approximating ANH, ESB, and ROTJ, the columns go:

Luke, Han, Leia, Droids, Jedi, Imperials, Sith - with variation rows such as:

    Luke, Han, Leia, Droids, Cantina

Luke, Han, Leia, Cloud City, Bounty Hunters, Imperials

Luke, Han, Leia, Rebel Alliance, Ewoks, Imperials

Luke, Han, Leia, Jabba the Hutt's gangsters

I count 102 original vintage MOVIE figures, noting that the vintage cardbacks would remove older versions of C-3PO and R2D2, not show both Snaggletoothes, the Max Rebo Band Members, or count Jabba the Hutt and Salacious Crumb even though they were characters and not creatures.

In rows of 10, 102 figures could be displayed to create an easy visual reference guide to the best updates for the modern figures by this order (leaving 5 blank spaces so one can fill them in with pictures later when those figures get made):

    Luke-Han-Leia-Chewie-R2D2-C3PO-Obi-Wan-Death Squad Cmdr-Stormtrooper-Vader

    Luke Xwing-Tusken Raider-Jawa-Blue Snag-Red Snag-R5D4-Gonk-Walrusman-Momaw-Greedo

    Sy Snoot-Droopy-Max-Rancor Kpr-8D8-EV9D9-ReeYees-YakFace-Tessek-Weequay

    Jabba the Hutt, Salacious Crumb

In case anyone else wants to tackle this project, here are the links to the figures I thought would look best:

(please be sure to credit Rebelscum's photographer(s) since their work made this possible)

In BOLD are figures that have not been re-made (the right characters because yes I know there are 2 Imperial Dignitaries and tons of Hoth Rebel Soldiers, etc). Like I said - I'd save space for them so you can add them to your image in another year or so.

Anyway, who wants to make this? Steve should post it on the mainpage when it's done for sure!

But if you wish to duplicate the vintage card back, you'd need to "replace" earlier versions of figures (R2-D2, C3PO come to mind) with the recent ones (R2 sensorscope, limbs Threepio). And there could be black blur spots for as-yet made ones (like the Ewoks pre-ROJ).

Good idea. But, alas, I lack the requirements for

It'd be nice if Hasbro would do something like this for the new line. While the fronts of the cards are great, the backs are kinda blah.

Photoshopping is easy compared to all the research you put into your post.

How come your card example is only the 77 figure one and not the most recent one?

Here is a first draft with Prune Face.
Took about an hour to do one figure.

Not perfect, but hard to do at a scale that can be uploaded to the site.
I would recommend just starting a new one. That way the figure detail can be taken into effect.

It's a nice idea, but there are still a few unmade vintage figures, and I do think it would be much easier to just cover some stairs in yellow fabric and snap a photo. But carry on as you will.

And they're not going to put a whole ton of figures on the new cardbacks, as there are never 77 different ones available at any given time. I would like something similar to the POTJ days, but I also like the character bios and pictures (which aren't even on the upcoming TVC cards).

Good work Darth Metalmute. That's the general idea.

But, first the idea IS NOT TO EXACTLY duplicate the Vintage cardback I posted a picture of as an example for any final version.

By ordering the figures like I listed them in the rows above (not the links - they are useful but somewhat out-of-order) you'll be able to see the Lukes lined up in columns, (for the most part) while the rows represent movies or themes (for the most part).

So an exact duplicate of the vintage card with the modern figures would not be as cool or useful as this new row-and-column method of ordering them.

Bel-Cam Jos I do not wish to duplicate the earlier vintage cardback exactly - R2D2 had 3 vintage versions and C-3PO had 2. I want to show all of them instead of omit the earlier ones like KENNER did back in the day. Obviously in today's modern versions, we have even more R2's and Threepios: Jabba's Sailbarge versions of each, etc. but they are NOT to be included, as this is a celebration of the original vintage line.

I mean Leia gets 5 figures shown and Lando 3. The cardback creator can put in their favorite modern version of each single unique offering of Bespin Lando, Skiff Lando, and General Lando, for example (but Smuggler Lando does not belong). I merely used the links to suggest my favorite versions of these characters' modern updates.

(Haha - I just realized Darth Vader will only get one SINGLE figure shown on this cardback much to the chagrin of his 90 other modern action figure versions )

The cardback is only an example, so even the last POTF vintage coin card with something like 97 figures on the back is not what we're going for. This cardback must have 102 figures shown - all the R2D2s, the Rebo Band, Threepios, Snaggletooths, Salacious Crumb, and Jabba The Hutt himself, as he's a character and not a beast.

DarthQuack - you were thinking exactly like I was when I made this post-topic.

That's why it could be a long project for someone to work on. I'd do it if I had the time, but I have a few other long projects to work on.

Not perfect, but hard to do at a scale that can be uploaded to the site.
Well of course it would have to be done at a larger scale to accomodate all the image layering and scaling issues until it could finally be flattened as an image and then shrunk so it can be posted - as this cardback I used as an example obviously was. A link to the image stored on a Facebook or Photobucket page might accomodate a larger size though.

A variant copy shrunk down could be posted here to entice people to click on the link.

I would recommend just starting a new one. That way the figure detail can be taken into effect.
My figures are in storage to a great degree and I've also been working for months to organize their storage in boxes such as "Mos Eisley Cantina" which gets one Han, one Luke, one Chewie etc - whereas I have dozens of some of those figures for the scenes I want to create with them.

It would be another project to go through all the boxes and pulling the single 8D8 figure I own (I think I only bought one) and recording where I pulled him from - or worse - where I get the Imperial Senator Leia from whereas she's duplicated in many boxes from "Blockade Runner" to "Yavin Base."

So to answer JabbaJohnL's question - yes taking a new photograph would be easier if I had access to all my figures. Someday when I have a house and a place to set up my scenes, I might endeavor to do this - and setting up the figures on a staircase with a colored tarp on it might work great (nice idea!).

But I can't do it right now. Maybe someone else can.

That would save so much time from doing this as a Photoshop project. However, the latter makes so much less of an organizational mess for me (at this particular given moment).

And they're not going to put a whole ton of figures on the new cardbacks, as there are never 77 different ones available at any given time. I would like something similar to the POTJ days, but I also like the character bios and pictures (which aren't even on the upcoming TVC cards).
You're very correct JabbaJohn. That's why we have to make the poster-picture because Hasbro is not likely to do this. I don't even think they have any plans to release all the OT vintage on TVC cards. They have done some in the past already (VOTC) and Nien Numb or Malakali? Really? The POTJ days' cardbacks were OK but nothing spectacular. It showed more than 3-4 figures that were currently shipping, but the 20 or so figures that it did show were also ones available or that were recent or upcoming.

No, Hasbro is not going to make 102 figures available in the TVC - and especially not all OT with PT figures being carded this way for the first time (which I think is nevertheless a really cool idea - but not cool enough I'll be buying any figures to keep carded myself).

Still, I bet whoever makes this cardback / poster will have created a celebrated image that might rock on all the SW fansites because this would be a popular thing to do - showing a complete photo of the modern updates of all 102 vintage figures (with 5 blank spaces left so the right figures' pictures can be Photoshopped in later as good pics of Wooof (vintage Klaatu) surface, and the right Imperial Dignitary (Sim Aloo) and a white-guy Bespin Guard with a mustache are added into the collection, along with the right Hoth Rebel Soldier and Lumat.

And I still like the blue cardback style from ESB best. None of those cards (blue or gold) showed 102 figures anyway. A green the color of the POTJ cards would look cool, too. It's really up to whomever is designing this.

There were 92 figures on the vintage POTF cardback and 96 figures total if you only count individual carded releases and disregard variations (blue Snaggletooth). The POTF Planetary Map did include Yak Face, though, for a total of 93 figures.

Your comment seems to imply that the vintage cardbacks were created in Photoshop, but Photoshop wasn't released until 1990, so these cardbacks weren't created in a computer, they were pieced together by hand. Those figures were all placed on a display base and photographed all at once. Which is what I would recommend for this project, since it is the fastest method and would achieve the best results, with every figure being photographed at the exact same angle and under identical lighting.
