Today, August 1st 2010, MTV is officially 31 years old.
Born at 0:01 on August 1st 1979, the first music video played was The Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star".
It is a significant event in modern American history.
Back in those days visionaries challenged the preconceived notions of what television ought to be. The result was a full decade of a ground breaking and revolutionary new form of art. There were no rules, no limits, no real guidance, it was all fresh and new and exciting.
Then came the 90's, Madonna, The Real World, Road Rules, Corporate sell-outs, Major Motion pictures, blah blah blah.
For those of us old enough to remember the golden days of MTV, let us take a moment to mourn what was, and what could have been.
