Lego gets Pirates of the Caribbean license, sets, video game

I hadn't heard about this before, just saw it in the SSG news, the press release about Lego at Toy Fair: http://www.sirstevesguide.com/conten...ional-Toy-Fair

I'm stunned to see that Pirates of the Caribbean is... jumping ship (har har) from Megabloks to Lego. And since they're doing a POTC Lego video game, which I am quite excited to hear and will likely buy, it opens the door to doing sets based on every film in the series.

So, are Lego Pirate fans up in arms about the movie soiling their pure subline, or are they thrilled?

I wonder if Lego will let Steve and other sites shoot the POTC sets at Toy Fair over the next few days. I hope so.

From a Lego stand point this is kind of old news. There was an unofficial announcement last year with a Jack Sparrow mini-figure at one of the toy fairs. Lego/Disney released photos of all the sets but the Black Pearl about 10 days ago. Brickset has the pictures in their database. There's three sets from the first two films and the rest are from the new one. Based on the set numbers the Black Pearl is from an early film. Hopefully Steve can get some new images of these and of the Black Pearl.

My son got a bunch of Halo Mega-Bloks for Christmas and they are the biggest pieces of junk I've ever seen. They don't lock together well, they don't stay together during play, and the colors that are the same have different shades. In thirty years of collecting Legos, I've had one piece that was misshapen. There was at least three pieces per set of those Halos sets that were bad.

The Pearl's masts are very tall, impressive. I remember when I had a hard time explaining to Lego that they should make "playsets" for Star Wars, they said all their sets were "play sets", and when I clarified I meant "environments" they were still somewhat confounded. Now looking at POTC, they really have focus on the concept.

They're cute sets, but I don't feel like they really capture POTC as well as the Mega Bloks sets did, because those sets could use more molded parts to carry concepts through. That said, if their blocks sucked, then there's no discussion there.

I love that quote. I need to find a way of using it more. I hate Mega Bloks and pretty much all knock-off brands. Of the few pieces I've picked up over years have been fine, but you can tell their not the same. The quality just isn't there. I've had only two Lego bricks over the years be misshapen brand new.

JT, the ship is not the Black Pearl. It's the Queen Anne's Revenge. Size wise, it's looks like three hull sections are used. So that puts it about the size of the Barracuda But the main mast is likely taller. I'd guess it's a little shorter than the Imperial Flag because there's no upper deck.

I'm guess the Black Pearl will be a Fall or Winter release. I'm debating whether the Pearl will be a bigger set or smaller then the Queen Anne. At just under 1,100 pieces the Queen Anne is the second biggest Lego ship. If it's bigger how much better might it be?
